Year 4 visit Stony Stratford
Our school is in the Parish of Stony Stratford.  There has been a town here since before Roman times.  Near the town Watling Street crossed the river Great Ouse with a ford.  There is a fine limestone road bridge there now.  Following a number of fires the town was largely rebuilt in Georgian times.  Some new houses were built in the 1970's and 80's.

The High Street has many fine old buildings reminding us of the days when stony Stratford was an important coaching town between London and Birmingham and Holyhead,

Halfway up the high street are the famous Bull Hotel and the Cock Hotel.  These are reputed to be the home of the 'Cock and Bull' stories

These pictures show the 'back' of old coaching inns.  The passage allowed coaches to come in from the main road

These hotels are now used for other purposes but keep their tell tale signs   Some architectural changes!!
