History in Queen Eleanor School is taught at three levels – local,
national and international. Topics are related to the present day by
asking what happened, why and how the results affect the way we live
now. The younger children look at comparing their homes, toys and
seaside holidays with those of the past and two important English
historical episodes – The Great Fire of London and Florence Nightingale.
As they get older the children study Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans,
Henry VIII, local coaching inns, Victorian Britain, children in WWII and
how British life has changed. Resources to enhance the teaching of
history include books, photo packs, artefact boxes and computer
programmes. All are used to follow the QCA guidelines in accordance with
the National Curriculum. Visits this year have included: Stacey Buses
Museum, French Battlefield museums, the seaside and a visit from a group
of Tudors who recreated a battle involving Year 5 and pikes!
