Numeracy is concerned with the number, size, shape and position of
articles. Parents can help pre-school children by playing counting games
and using words like “bigger than, smaller than, in front of, behind,
on top of, below" etc. From Foundation level children will develop
their knowledge and understanding of the number system and how it is
used in calculations and problem solving. They will develop their skills
in representing data in graphs and charts and will learn to use the
measuring system. This includes length, mass and capacity, as well as
time. They will also explore shape and space. Numeracy is taught daily
with ‘mental maths’ incorporated into the lessons and emphasis is placed
on developing the ability to manipulate numbers mentally as much as
possible. From Year 2 onwards children are encouraged to learn their
multiplication tables. The use of computer programs is encouraged to
develop skills in a wide range of mathematical activities. Much real
mathematics occurs during practical science investigations or within
topic work, when problems are being solved. Many skills are developed or
practised in this way, including the correct use of calculators. We
also encourage children to practice times tables and number facts at
home as well as at school.
