Science is an important subject in primary schools, in the National
Curriculum it is one of the three core subjects along with English and
mathematics. At Queen Eleanor Primary School our aim is to enable
children to develop a scientific way of thinking, planning and working.
Throughout the school science is taught using the DFEE QCA Schemes of
Work covering a wide range of topics. These include: living things –
animals and plants, light and dark, sound, materials, forces and
movement and electricity in Key Stage 1. Key Stage 2 builds on these
topics in much greater detail increasing the children’s scientific
knowledge and understanding. Science activities at Queen Eleanor
Primary are designed to:
- give children experience of practical skills e.g. following
instructions, using specialist equipment accurately, drawing charts,
graphs and tables using different formats;
- develop observation skills, improve communication and
co-operation;
- teach children to devise and carry out fair test investigations;
- gather information and test ideas.
Lessons involve a great deal of discussion around both practical
and subject based lessons, enabling the children to investigate,
make logical deductions and develop knowledge and understanding of
the physical world.
