Curriculum Pages - Special Educational Needs

Children with Special Educational Needs.

‘Queen Eleanor Primary School values the abilities and achievements of all its pupils. We adopt an inclusive policy and are committed to providing the best learning environment for each pupil, promoting development in understanding and social maturity alongside peers whenever possible.’

At Queen Eleanor our principles for children with Special needs are:

  • That children’s needs are identified;
  • That each child’s progress is carefully monitored;
  • IEP’s are regularly reviewed;
  • That parents are kept fully informed of their child’s progress;
  • That individual pupils are aware, and informed of their own progress where possible through discussion and target setting;
  • SENDIS and The Educational Psychologist Service will support children who require more specialist advice.

Curriculum

  • Children with Special Educational Needs will have full access to the National Curriculum, which will offer a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum;
  • A range of teaching strategies are used in lessons to support pupils including differentiation;
  • Small group support is provided for literacy and numeracy sessions in every class;
  • Where appropriate, some children are withdrawn from the classroom for small group or one to one work.

Children who are experiencing considerable learning difficulties may need the extra support of a ‘Statement of Special Needs’. This is carried out in consultation with Parents, SENDIS, Educational Psychologist, other appropriate agencies and the LEA.

Resources

Resources for Special needs are always prioritised towards the provision of adults to support children with special needs in the classroom alongside the class teacher.
Specific resources to support children are bought as appropriate and in consultation with relevant external agencies.

Parents

Parents are welcomed in the school and their views are taken into account. Regular meetings are held to discuss progress and target setting. They are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s education.
